We Give You The Best ! Services THat You Can Trust

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION can be a sign of a physical or psychological condition. It can cause stress, relationship strain, and low self-confidence. The main symptom is a man’s inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Patients suffering from erectile dysfunction should first be evaluated for any underlying physical and psychological conditions. If treatment of the underlying conditions doesn’t help, medication and assistive devices, such as pumps, can be prescribed.

Erectile Dysfunction Symptoms

ED may be a major warning sign of cardiovascular disease indicating blockages are building in a man’s vascular system. Some studies have shown men with ED are at significant risk of getting a heart attack, stroke or circulatory problems in the legs. Erectile dysfunction symptoms might include persistent:

  • Trouble getting an erection.
  • Trouble keeping an erection.
  • Reduced sexual desire.
  • Low self-esteem.
  • Depression.
  • Distress for the man and his partner.
Erectile Dysfunction Causes

ED can result from health problems, emotional issues, or from both. Some known risk factors are:

  • Diabetes – Erectile dysfunction is common in people with diabetes. An estimated 10.9 million adult men in the U.S. have diabetes, and 35 to 50 percent of these men are impotent. The process involves premature and unusually severe hardening of the arteries. Peripheral neuropathy, involving the nerves controlling erections, is commonly seen in people with diabetes.
  • Depression – Depression is another cause of ED and is closely related to erectile dysfunction. Because there is a triad relationship between depression, ED, and cardiovascular disease, men with depression should be fully evaluated for medical illness as well as psychological factors. Some antidepressant medications cause erectile failure.
  • Neurologic causes – Many neurological problems such as diabetes, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, heavy metal poisoning, spinal cord and nerve injuries, and nerve damage from pelvic operations can cause erectile dysfunction.
  • Drug-induced ED – A wide variety of prescription drugs, including blood pressure medications, antianxiety drugs, antidepressants, glaucoma eye drops, and cancer chemotherapy agents, are associated with ED.
  • Hormone-induced ED – Hormonal abnormalities such as increased prolactin, steroid abuse, thyroid hormone imbalance, and hormones administered for prostate cancer may cause ED. Low testosterone can contribute to ED but is rarely the sole factor.
  • Reduced blood flow to the penis – Health issues such as hardened arteries, heart disease, high blood sugar (diabetes), and smoking can reduce blood flow into the penis.
  • Cancer treatments near the pelvis – Surgery or radiation for cancers in the lower abdomen or pelvis can affect penis functionality and cause ED. Treatments for prostate, colorectal, or bladder cancer commonly contribute to erectile dysfunction.
  • Trauma – An injury may contribute to symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
